Hammock is a platform for contemporary writing from the Indian subcontinent and beyond. We focus on new, unique and exploratory writing that goes beyond the obvious.
Whether it’s fiction, narrative non-fiction, interviews, recommendations, personal essays, culture or something that doesn’t quite fit any of those, our goal is to bring you what’s fresh and pushes the envelope, while employing an author-first approach.
We want to discover the best new writing, to curate the weird and wonderful that struggles to find its space in the world.
What we want: Short stories or standalone novel excerpts about anything and everything; non-fiction that’s well-researched and deeply felt; personal pieces about belonging, grief, longing, regret, joy, place, and more; nuanced opinions on identity, post-capitalism, family, nightlife, film, therapy, art, relationships, memory, coming of age, intoxication, loneliness or elation; moments that shook you up, book lists that have a new approach, insider or outsider takes on a particular scene or phenomenon, unique reading or viewing experiences that you want to share with the world; bold, experimental ideas, and anything that you think needs to be seen.
Pitch or share your work, we’re pretty open-minded.
What we don’t want: Topical think pieces, opinions on news, political manifestos, poetry, standard book or film reviews, travelogues (unless they’re in the Pico Iyer meets Hunter S Thompson mold), academic writing, genre fiction, flash or micro-fiction. None of these rules are hard and fast but going through our website should give you an idea of what we like.
Technicalities: To submit, send your pitches or completed stories to submissions@hammockmag.com in 12 pt, preferably double spaced with your contact details included.
